Josh Machiz

Partner, Founder Experience and Marketing

How do you view your role with portfolio companies?

I spent 10 years taking companies public at Nasdaq and have extensive experience helping all stages of private companies successfully grow their brands and prepare them for the public markets. I’m fully engaged when it comes to marketing support, I can help with everything from how to grow your brand’s digital footprint to evaluating your martech stack and eventually IPO readiness and advisory.

What is one thing you wish more startup founders thought about earlier in their journey?

Their personal brands. Often founders get so wrapped up in building the company’s brand they forget the importance of creating their own. Founders care about what they’re building - it’s important for the world to see that, and to have a platform to connect with the world, and their own employees, in an authentic way. It can be scary to build in public, but I advise founders to do so whenever possible, because it can be a terrific way to get the internet to root for what you're building.

What’s one thing people might not know about you?

I grew up attending a crunchy alternative school in upstate New York, where I learned basket weaving, forging, and wilderness survival. It’s the root source of my out-of-the-box creativity, and it’s why I can make anything work.

Meditation or yoga?

Neither, I love Pilates. I attend so often that I could teach the class from memory. I tried once but they get really mad if you don’t actually work there.

What makes Redpoint unique?

I joined Redpoint because I wanted to build upon a historic and successful Silicon Valley institution, the original “internet only” venture firm has changed so much with each evolution and this moment is no different. As we embark on a new journey for Redpoint, we are extending the brand into media: bringing our knowledge and expertise within the startup ecosystem to life. We’ll be giving back to the startup community that built us by developing original fun and engaging education and entertainment content across social and owned channels.

Why did you choose to be a venture capitalist?

I was at Nasdaq before this and had a front-row seat to the growth and expansion of generation-defining companies and that’s something I don’t ever want to be without! So I came to Redpoint, partially to experience the journey earlier in the entrepreneurial experience and partially because they don’t let you ring the bell unless you’re doing the work from the company side.

Favorite Twitter handle?

@LoganBartlett, but I’d say that even if he wasn’t very clear I’m contractually obligated to.

What is the best trip you’ve taken and why?

I went on a trip this summer to the Amalfi coast with four of my best friends, Ischia, Sorrento, Capri and Positano (those were the cities, not the friends). I love Italian food more than anything and it is a holiday I'll dream about forever.
