Data Warehousing for All

At Redpoint, we’re always proud to support our portfolio companies and it’s gratifying when one receives industry recognition for its accomplishments.

In case you missed it, last week the O’Reily Strata + Hadoop Conference held its fourth annual Startup Showcase where a panel of judges picked the best data-driven startups.  The first place winner was Snowflake Computing, a company we are honored to back for its veteran team, timely vision, and killer technology.  A good recap of the conference with insights on the evolution of big data technologies can be found on Snowflake’s blog here.

More broadly, we’re excited about Snowflake because they are disrupting the status quo of the old and complicated premise-based SQL data warehousing systems and re-imagining a better way to turn data into insights. The experienced team at Snowflake, which includes data scientists from companies like Oracle, Microsoft, Cloudera and Google, observed that there hadn’t been a major advance in database technology in more than a decade. They knew that global enterprise customers needed a better way to turn their data into insights, instead of worrying about managing infrastructure.

By building a database entirely based on the cloud and bringing together all the users, data and workloads into a single place, Snowflake lets customers access their company’s data as a service so that they can better run their business. Snowflake is making data warehousing accessible to everyone by building this new model from scratch, and using low cost, but highly available cloud resources.

Technically, this is a company that’s solving hard problems with real innovation.  Personally, we know how hard they work, and we’re thrilled to see the judges at Strata take notice. Congrats to Bob Muglia and the entire team!

Backing Snowflake: Proven Leadership with the Right Technology at the Right Time

Today Redpoint portfolio company Snowflake Computing is introducing their Elastic Data Warehouse, a highly scalable data warehouse purpose-built for the cloud.  We believe the market opportunity for Snowflake to reinvent the SQL data warehouse for the cloud is enormous and transformative.

Data warehousing is a $9 billion business that is in the early days of discovering the cloud.  Our thesis is that the investment into business intelligence tools for unstructured data has overshadowed the biggest untapped void in data analytics. Snowflake is changing the game by making data warehousing accessible to everyone by designing a new data warehouse built from scratch in utilizing low cost but highly available cloud resources.

Snowflake today introduced their Elastic Data Warehouse, which brings an innovative and patent-pending architecture to convene all users, data and workloads into a single SQL data warehouse. It gives users the power of SQL data warehousing with the flexibility of big data platforms and the elasticity of the cloud—at a fraction of the cost of on-premises solutions.

Lead by seasoned executive, Bob Muglia, Snowflake’s truly impressive team that shares a vision and a mission to disrupt the inefficient ways of data warehousing.  We are impressed with the deep technology bench at Snowflake, data scientists from companies like Oracle, Microsoft, Cloudera and Google, who hold over 120 patents in databases and data processing.

To Bob and the entire Snowflake team, thank you for partnering with us and welcome to the Redpoint family!

Lastline Joins Redpoint Portfolio

We are very fortunate to add Lastline to the Redpoint portfolio. By leveraging an advanced cloud based system emulation technology, Lastline has developed the best malware detection and remediation technology in the world. Since 2006, the founders of Lastline have worked on a research project called Anubis at the University of Santa Barbara, where they have been analyzing unknown binaries and helping companies to understand zero day exploits and APTs.

Today’s network firewalls and anti-virus gateways are no longer able to deal with the complexities of targeted malware threats, because they do not look directly at executing binaries. Lastline solves this problem with a cloud based solution that easily scales from small SMB to global enterprise and MSSP deployments.

It is always exciting to work with a team of brilliant researchers and scientists who are at the forefront of critical industry defining challenges, and the Lastline founders are clearly the thought leaders in this industry. The elegance of their product solution, and the early adoption of their product by leading global customers bodes well for the future of the company.

We couldn’t be more excited to add Lastline to the Redpoint portfolio and we expect the company will be just as successful as our other leading security companies, Fortinet (FTNT) and Qihoo360 (QIHU).

Redpoint’s Investment in Moogsoft

When you combine a brilliant founder with multiple industry-defining successes under his belt with an idea capable of leapfrogging the very industry he helped create, you know you have an exciting investment. Then, when you add the fact the company is bringing the power of Big Data to solve the challenges enterprises are facing as they manage a mix of legacy on-premise software stacks and cloud services, you know you have a very exciting investment.

That sums up why I’m thrilled about our Series A investment in Moogsoft, a company that is bringing the power of big data to the critical IT service management industry in a tremendously compelling way. Moogsoft’s founder, Phil Tee, needs no introduction to people familiar with the world of IT infrastructure and management. As the creator of the technologies that form the foundations of IBM Tivoli Netcool, Tee and his team are known for singlehandedly designing the software that monitors more than 90% of the worlds IP networks today.

With Moogsoft, Tee and his team are thinking big yet again about the very same problems that motivated them decades ago – but with a novel approach for today’s market and today’s customer. With businesses struggling to cost efficiently manage their overwhelming IT infrastructures as they shift to newer technologies, the time and costs associated with management have become major challenges. By applying Moogsoft’s software which exploits the latest innovations in Big Data and Natural Language Processing, their customers are already seeing reduction in costs and increases in efficiency of their staffs – and finding real value.

Redpoint couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity ahead for the Moogsoft team and we’re proud to welcome them to the Redpoint portfolio.
